The actor was not afraid of death as he had several close shaves while shooting for films. His closest brush with death occurred when he was on the set of 'Kolilakkam'. He escaped with serious injuries while young actor Jayan plunged to his death during the shooting of a stunt scene in an airborne helicopter. "The pilot jumped out of the helicopter which went out of control and I was left alone in it. The helicopter swished wildly through the air and hit the ground throwing me out," he recalled in a recent interview.

Several circumstances in which he has seen death before him has passed away in his life. He would often contemplate on an incident that took place in the course of shooting the film 'Kolilakkam' in 1980. While shooting the film 'Kolilakkam' at Cholavaram in Chennai in which Nair and Jayan were acting, the scene where, from behind the bike ridden by Sukumaran below he had to hand on to the landing pad of the helicopter that flue up in one shot Jayan lost his balance and was throne off the helicopter. He breathed his last, at the same time. This incident happened just before Nair's eyes. In this accident Balan K. Nair broke his leg and spent as much as 15 days in the hospital unconscious. The demise of his colleague Jayan had taught him much.
